My bakery nostalgia sets in right around Halloween. Any other year at this point I would be hard at work decorating cakes to look like spider webs, making eyeballs to put on cupcakes, or crafting marzipan witches for haunted gingerbread houses.
It was during the holiday seasons that I really loved my work; I couldn’t believe I was getting paid to play with food. There are one hundred reasons why I’m grateful to now be staying at home with Eden and working on The Sweet Life, but I do miss the hands-on creativity I found at my job on a daily basis.
So I had an idea. I need to throw a Halloween party. Fill the house with gourds and ghosts, decorate some creepy eyeball cupcakes, mold marzipan into witches, spin cobwebs out of buttercream, etc. I was getting very excited about the thought of it all.
Then reality set in. Who has the time for this?
So I lowered my Halloween expectations and whipped up a batch of these Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispies Treats. They may not have satisfied all my spooky and creative needs but they are delicious and a perfect October treat. Over the weekend I slowed down enough to sit down with a Rice Krispies Treat and a cup of warm apple cider, my one little pumpkin decorating the table. Perhaps this is what the Halloween season will look like for these next few years of early parenthood.
And I’m okay with that.
