  • Black Beans - For this recipe, you will need cooked black beans. Make sure that they are soft enough to be pulsed.
  • Red Bell Peppers - I use red bell peppers but feel free to swap them for any other type of bell pepper. Just note that green bell peppers will be less sweet and add bitterness to the vegan burger.
  • Rolled Oats - For a gluten free burger, make sure to use gluten free rolled oats.
  • Seasoning - A combination of cumin, salt, paprika, and chili powder will add some serious flavor to these black bean burgers.
  • Oil - I recommend olive oil but feel free to use any oil of your choice. Avocado and walnut oil are also great options.

Recommended Equipment

You only need a few things to make these delicious burgers. Use a cutting board to chop the ingredients, a food processor to pulse the burger mixture, and a skillet to cook your vegetables and ingredients.

Step One - Soak Flaxseeds

To begin you need to make a flaxseed egg. This is used to help bind the burgers together and prevent them from falling apart. To make the flax egg, mix flaxseeds and water in a small bowl and set aside for 5-10 minutes. When the flax egg is ready, it will be thick and gelatinous, similar in texture to whipped eggs.

Pro Tip: Make sure you let the water fully absorb into the flaxseeds. If your flax eggs aren't properly prepared, the burgers may fall apart when cooking.

Step Two - Cook Bell Peppers & Onions

Grab a large skillet and heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot add the chopped onion, chopped red pepper and minced garlic and cook until the red pepper begins to soften for 4-5 minutes. Remove from heat and add in the spices.

Step Three - Pulse Ingredients

First, add black beans and rolled oats to a food processor and pulse until they form a sticky mixture. It should stick between your fingers when pressed. Next, add the rest of the dry ingredients along with lemon juice and flax egg and pulse again. Taste and adjust seasonings.

Pro Tip: Make sure you pulse the cooked black beans and oats together before you add the remaining the ingredients. If you don't the burger may not hold its shape properly.

Step Four - Shape the Patties

Scoop out ½ cup of the batter and shape it into patties. If you would like, you could use a hamburger press to ensure they are all the same size. Refrigerate the pressed patties for half an hour to help them hold together when they are cooked.

Heat olive oil over medium heat in a non-stick skillet and cook patties for about 5 minutes on each side. Make sure the patties are cooked all the way through and slightly brown.

  • 1 tbsp. flax seeds

  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups cooked black beans
  • ⅓ cup rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. paprika
  • ¼ tsp. chili powder

    Hi! This looks awesome and can’t wait to try! But I read and re-read the instructions and don’t see when to add the flaxegg? Do u pulse with it when u add the lemon juice? Or mix by hand after? Sorry if I missed it. Thanks!
